Local knowledge
Pitstone had 2,952 residents at the 2011 census, six miles east of Aylesbury and five south of Leighton Buzzard, directly adjoining Ivinghoe.
Most of the housing is twentieth-century and later β the number of houses rose most steeply in the 1950s, from 169 to 252, and has grown since. That means largely conventional suburban stock with driveways, reasonable doorways and room to load, which makes the work predictable.
The village's shape was set by industry. The Pitstone cement works ran from 1937 to 1991, and the Castlemead area takes its name from Castle Cement, the works' last owner. That legacy means there is unit and commercial clearance work here alongside household jobs, and business premises need a site contact and usually a booked slot.
The Grand Union Canal runs roughly along the north-west boundary, and Pitstone Windmill β owned by the National Trust and the oldest datable windmill in Britain β sits between here and Ivinghoe. Properties towards the canal can have restricted vehicle access, so it is worth flagging the approach.
At 10.9 miles and roughly 32 minutes from our base, the onward route is worked out before the van is loaded rather than after. Anything still usable is kept separate as we go, and only what is genuinely finished with goes to a household recycling centre.
Charity and reuse shops nearby
We cannot promise any particular shop will accept a given item β that is always their call on the day β but sorting for reuse first is how we keep as much as possible out of the skip.
Household recycling centres closest to Pitstone
You do not need to visit any of these yourself β the point of booking us is that the loading, the trip and the disposal are all covered.
